Damn you, rhinovirus!

I have come down with the common cold.

Blurgh.

It's horrid to be flu-y at the best of times; but with the second and final week of "The Truth" beginning tonight, it's positively nasty.

I've had a couple of near misses with colds in the past couple of months, and I've discovered that getting stuck into some good quality orange juice has been the best medicine. Consequently I stopped off at the supermarket last night to pick up two litres of Berri "Orange + Iron", as I figured as a woman with a low red-meat intake, it couldn't hurt to boost the Fe levels a bit as well.

I drank about half of it last night, and will scoff the rest (and hopefully something with pseudo-ephedrine in it) this evening before the show. Until then I shall remain a dope-eyed, sluggish, sniffly excuse for a human being.

Unless of course, someone has a magical relief for the common cold. Failing that, you could amuse me by describing times when you were inappropriately or inadvisedly ill.

  1. Get thee some garlic! Seriously, raw (if you can handle the thought, I've never been able to) but garlic capsules are the bomb. And yeah, juice it up!!

Worst sick story - well, aside from being struck with a hideous stomach virus when Cay-man was only three weeks old (thus my nights consisted of waking up to breastfeed, yanking him away to spew my guts up in a bucket, then continuing the breastfeeding), the worst I think was when I was due to leave for Canada, only to be struck down with the worst flu I've ever had. Then going to get chest x-rays and have the nurse looking at them say to me "Do you have a history of lung cancer in your family?"

I completely freaked, and only confronted her later to ask "Do you ask EVERYbody that lung cancer question?" She quickly told me that she did and apologised.

Anyhoo, had to postpone the trip, miss the LM school, everything fell to crap...

Now, it's just a sweet story to tell. :-)

  2. If you want a remedy for the common cold here's one my Grandmother swears by. Inject yourself with a nano-particle saturated fluid programmed for eradication of the enzyme GC-1004.

I got to enjoy my first trip out of the country with a nasty head-cold. I was extremely concerned about being in a pressurised environment for 14 hours while my own head was a pressurised environment but it turns out that they equalised and it was a pleasant trip.

  3. Ah! I am in fact, having a free flu shot courtesy of my employer later this week. Hopefully it will ward off anything nastier than my current bug.

And, Jenny, thanks for reminding me! I swallowed a garlic clove last time I had a cold, but didn't even think of it last night.

I'll just have to make sure I don't breathe too heavily on Marselan, who plays Otto the Vampire in "The Truth"!

  4. I usually attack colds with the 100% orange juice, fresh squeezed is the best. Vegemite soup also helps too. Just dissolve a heaped teaspoon of Vegemite (or Promite) in a mug of boiling water. Sip, you can dip bread in it.

But drink lots of water, get lots of sleep.

And the worst cold/flu I ever had was when I first started working for BCCLS. Third shift or something. Robert D asked me if he should call an ambulance. And on the way home on the train, an old man came over to me and said "Are you alright dearie? You're worrying me."

I was basically wishing I would die!

I did get a cracker at the end of my trip to the US too.
