The Chicks Are All Right

I pondered writing something about International Women's Day. But then my attention was drawn to this:

It's not everything that needs to be said, or should be said, or could be said.

But damnit, it's a good start.

  1. I want to see a female 007 - maybe Hale Berry can take his place. (I never really liked the current 007).
There needs to be more than one International Women's day, too. We shouldn't just have one day of the year to be recognised as equals.

  2. A female Bond?! That makes no sense! That's like saying "Hmm, we really need a male Beyonce". The good and bad aspects of Bond's masculinity are defining traits of the character. His multi-faceted masculinity is one of the main reasons the character is so intriguing. You can have interesting female spy characters but they won't be Bond. It's ok to have characters that are either male or female exclusively. The genders are (or should be) equal but they are different.

Also - Daniel Craig is the best actor to ever have taken the mantle of Bond. Yes, that is even compared to Connery. He captures the essence of a trained weapon of the state perfectly. Though I admit Quantum of Solace was a bit rubbish.

  3. If 007 were a woman, the character would be designed by men. So you'd end up with someone like Lara Croft - a sexualised caricature of a woman, scantily clad, and with attitudes/ responses that mirror how men see women, not as women really are.

It's like women in politics. Most of them have only succeeded because they think and act like men.

It's a man's world out there, dominated by the rich and the powerful. And in my experience, most women don't share mens' craving for wealth and power. Women know better. Women see the bigger picture.

To use an analogy, men want to drive the limo. Women prefer to be chauffeured around in the limo. And with limos, it's usually the servant who drives, and the boss who rides in the back. Women are fully aware of this!

I gave up a career to stay home baking cupcakes and raising babies. I'm not rich. I'm not powerful. But I am very, very content. So I don't aspire to much else right now, although I will one day. Maybe.

This, though, is what empowerment should be about - doing what I choose with my life, without coercion or criticism. Do I feel undervalued? No. I don't care if there is no recognition or praise from others, because I am proud of what I do, and how well I do it. I have approval from myself. That is enough.

It is only men, and women who think like men, who disagree with that.

And it is only women, and men who think like women, who understand that wealth and power are merely the toys used to distract men while women keep the world spinning.

I just wish the men would pick up after themselves when they play war. They're making a real mess of the place.

    - There are female script writers, directors and producers out there.

It's like women in politics. Most of them have only succeeded because they think and act like men.

    - Name one other Australian prime minister who nearly cried when addressing congress.

    - If they don't crave it, chances are they won't get it.

    - Clear example of how women are superior mentally and physically.

This, though, is what empowerment should be about - doing what I choose with my life, without coercion or criticism.

    - There's another word for this, and it's "selfishness".

Do I feel undervalued? No. I don't care if there is no recognition or praise from others, because I am proud of what I do, and how well I do it. I have approval from myself. That is enough.

    - A dog licking its own butt is also content and happy.

And it is only women, and men who think like women, who understand that wealth and power are merely the toys used to distract men while women keep the world spinning.

    - I always thought it was due to asymmetry during gravitational accretion, but sure, clearly it is people who only do what makes themselves happy that make the word spin.

I just wish the men would pick up after themselves when they play war. They're making a real mess of the place.

    - One can only hope that one of the things that you choose to do with your life is cleaning up after others, or else things will never get cleaned up.
